PUBLIC ALERT: Scotland: Specialist ICU Children’s Ambulance Stolen

20 Sep

An ambulance used for the emergency treatment of sick children has been stolen from outside a paramedic’s home.

The 4×4 Subaru Forester, covered with green and yellow livery, was taken from the driveway of a medic’s home at Johnstone in Renfrewshire.

The keys to the vehicle were stolen during a break-in at the property during Sunday night. Strathclyde Police say that nothing else was taken during the raid.

The ambulance car is kitted with specialist equipment and is used to transport children from around Scotland to intensive care units at hospitals in Edinburgh and Glasgow.

The vehicle is used by intensive care staff on an on-call basis, so that they can respond to emergencies from home.

Dr Jim Beattie, associate medical director of NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde Women’s and Children’s Services , told Sky News: “We are shocked and saddened.

“The vehicle had been taken home by a member of the paediatric intensive care unit team who was on-call and it was stolen from their driveway. It is hugely disappointing that someone would steal such a vehicle especially as it is very clearly marked as a paediatric ICU vehicle.”

The ambulance was a gift donated last year from Subaru to the Yorkhill Children’s Foundation , which raises funds for Yorkhill Children’s Hospital in Glasgow.

Shona Cardle, the foundation’s chief executive, told Sky News: “The theft of this life-saving vehicle is not just a car theft.

“This is a vital life-saving vehicle which is used to ensure the quick response needed to save the lives of sick children and babies from all over Scotland. Yorkhill Children’s Foundation is appalled that the life of a child or baby could be put in jeopardy by this mindless crime.”
