16 Sep

Five people are being questioned after gardaí discovered separate grow houses in Co Louth and Co Laois.

A man has been arrested following the discovery of a cannabis grow house near the village of Collon in Co Louth.

The intelligence-led operation began last night when gardaí and members of the Louth drugs unit raided the house.

In the adjoining garage they found what is being described as a sophisticated growing operation.

Provisional estimates suggest the garage could contain up to 500 cannabis plants at various stages of growth. The estimated street value is around €250,000.

The house and garage, which are located on a rural road between Collon and Drogheda, remain sealed off.

Gardaí are removing the plants and dismantling the growing and electrical systems in place.

A 43-year-old Chinese man national was arrested in the house and is being held in Drogheda Garda Station.

Separately, three men and a woman are still being questioned after gardaí discovered a cannabis grow house in Co Laois and a second one in preparation in Co Kildare.

They found 1,500 plants with an estimated street value of over €600,000, along with heat, lighting and irrigation systems in a shed at a house near Portlaoise yesterday morning.

The two Irish men and a Vietnamese man and woman are being questioned at Tullamore Garda Station.

The walls of the second grow house in Co Kildare had already been prepared, but the equipment had not been moved in.
