Nine News: Carlow woman undergoes keyhole surgery

A 67-year-old Carlow woman, Harriet Gould, is recovering from the first heart surgery of its kind here using keyhole surgery.

In a day-long operation, a medical team at the private Blackrock Clinic in Dublin repaired two of her heart valves at the weekend using this minimally invasive procedure.

The surgery was led by consultant cardiothoracic surgeon, Michael Tolan.

The complex procedure involves a much smaller incision than traditional surgery, less post-operative pain and a lower risk of infection.

The hospital stay is shorter and the surgery is much safer than traditional heart surgery.

The medical team at the Blackrock Clinic, which also included consultant anaesthetist Dr Fionnuala Lyons, trained in the new procedure at a cardiovascular centre in Belgium in recent years.

The technique is expected to be available in cardiac units in the public system in time.
