Bettystown, Co. Meath: Two Men Arrested As Gardai Make €1.5m Cannabis Bust

21 Jul

GARDAÍ are this morning continuing to interrogate two adult males in connection with a €1.5 million drugs find in a private house yesterday afternoon.

The men, who are understood to be aged 39 and 47, were arrested after the major discovery on the premises in Bettystown, Co Meath.

The drugs haul relates solely to herbal cannabis and was led by the Garda National Drugs Unit, which has been involved in a string of recent, significant drugs stings throughout Ireland.

The men are today continuing to be questioned at Kells Garda Station in Co Meath in connection with the incident.

The pair are being held under section 2 of the Criminal Justice Act, 1996.

In the past month alone, officers investigating Ireland’s black market drugs trade have seized millions of euro worth of potential lethal concoctions.

These seizures include the arrest of a man and woman aged 36 and 23 in Avoca, Co Wicklow, on July 6 in connection with €100,000 worth of cannabis resin and weed.

Just a week earlier, on June 30, herbal cannabis with an estimated street value of €1 million was seized by customs officers.

The 91kg of drugs were concealed in a consignment of chocolates and sweets that had arrived in Dublin Port from the Netherlands.

An Irish man in his late 20s was arrested at the time and held at Ballymun Garda Station.

The seizure was the result of an ongoing joint operation between the Revenue office and the Garda National Drugs Unit as a result of the profiling of potential suspects by officers at Dublin Port.
