Traveller Family Gang Jailed For OAP Scam

Traveller Family Gang Jailed For OAP Scam.

A family gang has been sentenced to a total of 24 years and eight months in jail after conning hundreds of elderly victims into paying for unneccessary roofing and gardening work.

David Price Senior, two of his sons, his wife and an accomplice, all of whom are travellers, targeted the most vulnerable victims near their caravan site on Humberside, across Yorkshire, Derbyshire, Nottinghamshire and as far away as Essex.

Some of the victims were in their late 90s, blind or suffering from dementia.

The judge described their crimes as “brazen and heartless”, their behaviour “threatening and intimidating”.

Teesside Crown Court heard at least 81 victims had been identified with payments totaling £175,645 but police believe the real scale of the con may be far greater, perhaps worth a million pounds or more.

Prosecutor Neil Davey QC said: “Their exposure to so many customers enabled them to identify the soft touches – the old, the forgetful, the confused, the senile, the easily bewildered and the easily frightened.

“Such customers were overcharged mercilessly. Those identified as suitable targets were visited again and again, and overcharged again and again.”

One 84-year-old victim from Humberside who cannot be identified for legal reasons paid the gang £14,960 for gardening and roofing jobs that were not carried out told police.

He said: “I felt that I was very, very silly to have been taken in by these people, to allow them to do these jobs… I’m just so disgusted with myself that I was taken in and let people like that into my home to do things.

“I didn’t breathe a word to anybody… I felt so stupid.”

David Price Sr, 42 his sons Abraham Price, 20, David Price Jr, 19, his brother, Shane Price Sr, 41, and family associate James Cunningham all admitted conspiracy to defraud at earlier court hearings.

Price’s wife, Angelina, 40, their sons, Abraham and David Jr, as well as Cunningham also admitted money laundering.
