A convicted sex offender has been returned to prison in England after more than a decade on the run, police said.

Thomas O’Brien was arrested on Thursday after being tracked to Ireland.

The 35-year-old was convicted of attempted rape, indecent assault and assault occasioning actual bodily harm at Birmingham Crown Court in February 2000 after trying to rape a man in his 20s in Birmingham, in 1998.

But after he failed to appear at the Court of Appeal in 2001 a warrant was issued dictating he should be returned to prison on his arrest.

West Midlands Police in the UK said since then officers from the Child Online Safeguarding Team have been working to track him down.

With help from the Garda Siochana, they finally traced him to an address near Dublin and O’Brien was arrested on Thursday.

He was flown back to Birmingham escorted by officers and was taken straight to prison to begin his sentence, a spokeswoman said.

West Midlands Detective Constable Del Powys, from the Child Online Safeguarding Team, who has been working to track O’Brien down, said: “It is the result of years of investigation, but I was always confident that we would eventually find him.”
