The FBI is launching a nationwide television blitz to track down one of America‘s ‘10 most wanted‘ – by highlighting the woman on the run with him.

Catherine Greig is the long-time partner of James ‘Whitey‘ Bulger, an 81-year-old Boston gangster wanted in connection with 19 murders.

The last credible sighting of the couple, who have been on the run for 16 years, was in 2002 when they were believed to be in London together.

There have been reported sightings all over Europe.

The FBI is running the 30-second public service announcement in areas where they believe Bulger and Greig may still have connections.

Special Agent Richard DesLauriers said: “The FBI believes that publicising Catherine Greig’s photo and characteristics among her contemporaries will lead to a tip about her whereabouts and ultimately to the arrest of Bulger.”

The announcement will air during shows that have a high percentage of female viewers in the same age group as Greig.

It is hoped that “a friend, co-worker, neighbour, hair stylist, manicurist, doctor or dentist” might recognise her.

“We are trying to reach a different audience that will produce new leads in the case,” said special agent Richard Teahan, who has been tracking Bulger since 2006.

“Greig has certain habits, characteristics, and idiosyncrasies that are recognisable.”

The TV slot highlights the 21-year age gap between Greig and Bulger.

The FBI says she loves animals, frequents beauty salons, is likely to have well-kept teeth as a former dental hygienist. She has also undergone plastic surgery.

The publicity blitz will also see images of the pair appear on digital billboards in New York‘s Times Square and other locations around the country.

The FBI says Greig, 60, is not implicated in the crimes Bulger is wanted for but that she is a federal fugitive wanted for harbouring him.

He is accused of murder, extortion, money laundering and narcotic distribution and is described as extremely violent and dangerous.

A reward of $100,000 (£61,000) is on offer for information leading to Greig’s arrest.

The reward for her partner stands at $2m (£1.2m) – the largest ever offered for a “Top 10” domestic fugitive
