A fire in a Parisian apartment building Thursday killed five people, four of whom jumped to their deaths from windows, police said.

Hundreds of firefighters battled the blaze for more than two hours in the “Labyrinth Estate” complex in the working class neighbourhood of Menilmontant.

The fire, which broke on the bottom floor of the building in northern Paris at around 3 a.m. (2 a.m. British time), also injured 42 people, six of them critically, police said.

Paris mayor Bertrand Delanoe said in a statement the building was not found to be lacking in safety standards. “It is up to a judicial probe to explain the fire’s origin,” he said.

Fires are common in northern Paris, where many of the buildings are more than 100 years old, poorly maintained and often have several families living in one apartment.

Eight people were injured last month when a fire struck another building in the same neighbourhood.
