Athlone, Co Westmeath: Man Appears In Court Charged With Murder Of Marie Green

A 62-year-old man has appeared at a special sitting of the district court in Athlone charged with the murder of Marie Greene.

A 62-year-old man has appeared at a special sitting of the district court in Athlone charged with the murder of Marie Greene.

Jimmy Devaney with an address of Millbrook Avenue, Monksland, Athlone was charged with murdering Ms Greene at Tullycross, Moydrum on 13 February.

Detective Sgt Aidan Curley gave evidence to the court of arresting Mr Devaney at 7.55am yesterday morning in Monksland.

The court was told Mr Devaney had nothing to say when the charge was read to him at 5.25pm.

Superintendent Aidan Glacken applied for the defendant to be remanded in custody to appear at Cloverhill District Court this day next week.

An application was made on Mr Devaney’s behalf for free legal aid.

The court was told he is in receipt of a pension as a retired army member.

Judge David Anderson was told an application would be made on Mr Devaney’s behalf on Monday. Judge Anderson remanded Mr Devaney in custody.

Earlier, a body was been removed from a bog in Annaghgortagh, outside Athlone.

State Pathologist Dr Marie Cassidy attended the scene and the remains have been taken to Midland Regional Hospital in Mullingar for a post mortem.

Members of the Garda Technical Bureau are carrying out a further examination of an area where the remains were discovered.

A search has been going on in the area since yesterday as part of the investigation into the disappearance of 37-year-old Marie Greene.
