Investigators want the public to help them trace fugitives thought to be on the run in the Costa del Sol region of Spain.

Among those on the latest “most wanted” list are men suspected of murder, child sex offences, kidnapping, robbery and drug smuggling.

They include a string of high-profile British gangland figures linked to organised crime, murder and violence.

One of them is Anthony Fraser, grandson of former violent East End gangland enforcer “mad” Frankie Fraser, and son of a convicted drug smuggler. The 39-year-old Londoner is wanted over the importation of two tonnes of cannabis – worth £5 million – hidden in a lorry load of frozen chicken from Holland in 2009.

Others included Glaswegian William Paterson, 31, wanted over the murder of gangster Kevin “Gerbil” Carroll in January last year. Criminal Carroll, dubbed Scotland’s “public enemy number one”, was blasted 10 times by masked gunmen outside an Asda superstore in Robroyston, near Glasgow.

Darren O’Flaherty, 36, of Liverpool, is wanted after a lorry driver was held at knifepoint while his load of electronics was stolen in North Yorkshire in 2006. The fugitive is also the prime suspect for the murder of Irishman John O’Neill, who was shot dead in a crowded bar in the Spanish resort of Benalmadena last summer.

Details of all 10 men will be posted by Crimestoppers on a “most wanted” website targeting the region. Several Spanish coastal resorts have been dubbed the “Costa del Crime” since the 1970s because hundreds of wanted British criminals are thought to have fled there.

The Serious Organised Crime Agency (Soca) and the Spanish police authorities are also involved in the move, codenamed Operation Captura.

Several waves of appeals, first launched in October 2006, have led to the arrest of 38 suspects out of 50 appeals. Anyone with information about those named by Crimestoppers should call 0800 555 111 in the UK or 900 555 111 in Spain.

Anthony Fraser is thought to be on the run in Spain after escaping during a police raid on a drugs gang two years ago.

He is accused of a plot to flood the UK with £60m worth of drugs.

The 39-year-old has been named at the head of a list being released by Crimestoppers of the 10 most wanted fugitives thought to be in Spain.

Detectives seized two tonnes of cannabis during the raid on a warehouse in Essex in March 2009.

The drugs were hidden in boxes of frozen chicken pieces imported from Holland.

Five men were arrested and later jailed for a total of 40 years after a trial at Southwark Crown Court.

Fraser was named on the charge sheet as a co-conspirator, whose role it was to hire a lorry to transport the drugs, but he has not been seen since the police ambush.

Police now believe he is hiding somewhere in the Alicante area of Spain’s Costa Blanca, among the huge British ex-pat community.

Ken Gallagher, head of European operations for the Serious Organised Crime Agency  (Soca), said: “We have many ways of tracking down wanted offenders, but where they drop off our radar we ask the public to help.

“Anthony Fraser is wanted for his part in an importation of two tonnes of cannabis, for which others have already been convicted.”

‘Mad’ Frankie, 87, was a notorious member of the Richardson gang, south London rivals of the Krays during the 1960s.

Fraser was known as ‘The Dentist’ after extracting the teeth of his enemies. He did not use anaesthetic.

He was nicknamed ‘Mad’ Frankie because he was twice certified insane during his 42 years in prison.

Anthony Fraser is the son of Frank Junior, who was jailed in 1999 for four years for possessing cocaine with intent to supply.

It seems crime runs in the Fraser family, with another son David jailed for drugs offences and grandson Jamie sent to prison for armed robbery.

Anthony Fraser is described as of average height, with green eyes and scars on his left brow and right hand.

The other nine on the most wanted list are due to be revealed by Crimestoppers later today.

:: Anyone who knows where Fraser might be can call Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.

From Spain, people should call 900 555 111.
