Gardaí say they are seriously concerned about the disappearance of a 37-year-old woman from Athlone in Co Westmeath.

Marie Greene from St Mel’s Terrace has not been seen by her family in the town since last Sunday.

She is described as approximately 1.68m (5ft 5in) in height of slim build and fair complexion.

She has medium-length brown hair which is normally tied in a ponytail.

When last seen she was wearing blue jeans, white runners and a navy zipped up fleece.

This morning Superintendent Aidan Glacken, who is leading the investigation into her disappearance, appealed to the public for help.

Supt Glacken said Ms Greene was a creature of habit who always returned to her mother’s home at night but had failed to do so last Sunday and there was now a genuine concern about her welfare. ´

Her mother Winnie joined gardaí in Athlone this afternoon to issue an emotional appeal to the public to come forward if they have any information which could lead to the location of her daughter Marie.

Mrs Greene said Marie is a caring and loving daughter who has always ensured that her mother was given her daily medication at all times since her father died ten years ago.

She said she fears her daughter is either dead or being held against her will by somebody.

A man has been arrested in connection with the disappearance of a woman in the Midlands.
Marie Greene was last seen at her family home more than a week ago and her mother, Winnie, fears she has been killed or abducted.

The 37-year-old went missing in Athlone on Sunday February 13 at 9pm.

The suspect, in his 60s, was detained in the town and is being questioned under Section 4 of the Criminal Justice Act.

Ms Greene is 5ft 5in and of slim build with fair hair. She was wearing jeans, white trainers and a blue fleece when she disappeared.
