Birr, Co Offaly: Vulnerable Elderly Person May Have Used Shotgun In Self-Defence To Repel Intruder

Gardaí in Co Offaly have issued an appeal to the public for help with their enquiries into a shooting in the town of Birr in the early hours of Monday morning.

Gardaí in Co Offaly have issued an appeal to the public for help with their enquiries into a shooting in the town of Birr in the early hours of this (Monday) morning.

A man in his 20s received injuries to his leg.

The man was taken to the Midlands Regional Hospital Tullamore and is said to be in a stable condition.

Supt Dave Kavanagh said he it was too early to say if the incident was connected to any type of an attempted break-in in the area.

He said gardaí would like to speak to the injured party before taking any further steps in the investigation.

Supt Kavanagh said he was asking anybody who was in the Connacht street-Mill Street-Wilmor road car park area of Birr between 11.30pm and midnight last night to contact gardaí in Birr by calling 057 9169710.

Neighbours in the Mill Street-Wood Row area of the town said today that elderly residents in the community had been badly shaken by the incident
