Sinn Fein President Gerry Adams has accused a corrupt political elite in a flawed system of causing the economic crisis.

Officially launching his party’s General Election campaign, Mr Adams maintained its 41 candidates in 38 constituencies were the only real alternative for voters.

He pledged that, if elected, Sinn Fein would put those on middle to low incomes first and reverse recent cuts to the minimum wage, to public services and to social welfare payments.

“The battleground is the economy but the election is also about who we are as a people,” said Mr Adams in Dublin.

“It is about our values. It is about political choices.

“The economy is in crisis because political choices were made by a deeply corrupt political elite operating within a flawed political system.

“Those political choices favoured the elites, not the citizens.

“Sinn Fein wants to change that.”

Mr Adams claimed a vote for Sinn Fein is a real vote for change.

He added: “As the only all-Ireland party Sinn Fein is standing on a platform that is underpinned by our republican principles.”
