A garda is still being questioned about his connections with the drugs business following his arrest in Dublin yesterday.

The garda had been under surveillance when he was arrested along with a suspected drug dealer in Chancery Street near the Four Courts at 2pm yesterday.

8g of cocaine, worth around €800, were also seized.

The garda is in his 20s and based in a south Dublin city station.

He is believed to have a cocaine habit, but possession of 8g can be considered more than sufficient for personal use.

The Garda Commissioner has suspended the garda from duty.

Both of the arrested men are being detained under Section 2 of the Drug Trafficking Act at Kevin Street Garda Station and can be questioned for up to a week.

The investigation, which is being conducted by the National Bureau of Criminal Investigation, has been going on for some time.

Detectives suspect that the garda may have been supplying the cocaine to a small group of friends, as well as using it himself.

The Garda Ombudsman Commission has been informed, but at present this is a garda investigation.
